Hydropower

The Karot Hydropower project is under construction on Jhelum River near Karot village, with a planned capacity of 720 MW. It includes the construction of a concrete gravity dam, 95.5 m in height. With a length of 27 km, the dam’s reservoir will have a volume of 164.5 million cubic meters. This project will be financed by International Finance Corporation, China’s Silk Road Fund, and is estimated at $2 billion.

The Mohmand Dam project is located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It includes an irrigation network, a reservoir with a length of 56 km, and a regulation pond area. Upon completion, it will generate 740 MW of low-cost hydropower. The project is expected to be completed in 2024.

 

Solar

About 400,000 solar panels are developed in Punjab, on over 200 hectares of the desert, as part of Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power Park (QASP) project. The solar farm, built by a Chinese company, costs around $131 million. This was the first project of the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The plant is the first step in the plan to build the world’s largest solar plant.

 

Road privatization

Two sections of Pakistan’s Peshawar-Karachi Motorway (PKM) project will be built by a Chinese contractor. The highway will have six lanes and will connect the port city of Karachi and other major cities in Pakistan. The Chinese corporation, China Railway 20 Bureau Group, will perform the construction works on the Lahore-Abdul Hakeem section of the highway, consisting of 230km. Another Chinese Corporation, China State Construction Engineering, will build the Multan-Sukkur section of the highway, consisting of 393 km.

 

Dams

The Mangla Dam is located on the Jhelum River in the Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir in Pakistan. It is one of the world’s largest dams and was built by a consortium of 8 construction firms from the U.S. The construction of the dam cost $1.473 billion and was funded by the World Bank and by the Asian Development Bank.

 

Cold Storage

The Cold Storage projects are developed by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority in Pakistan. It is designed to store 60,000 bags of vegetables or 180,000 crates of fruits. Its proposed location is one of the following: Deepalpu, Okara, Multan, Kasur, Sargodha, Swat Quetta, and Mardan. The total project cost is estimated at $1.7 million.

 

Port development

The Gwadar Port, located on the Arabian Sea at Gwadar in Balochistan province in Pakistan, is the world’s deepest seaport. Its construction began in 2002 and the first phase was completed in 2006. The second phase is still under construction and plans to further expand the port are still developed. The total project is estimated at $1.02 billion.

 

Airport development

The project for a New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) in Pakistan is under construction and it will be the country’s biggest airport, upon completion in 2022. The project is located in Gurandani and extends on 17 km2 of land. The airport will also include a cargo terminal, with a capacity of 30,000 tons per year with the possibility to be increased. The cost of the project is expected to rise at $246 million.
